Mayor's Corner

Well Monday the 21st will be the event many people have been waiting for: Total Eclipse of the Sun.  Unless you live in a bubble – you have been hearing about this event on TV, radio, newspapers and on -line for the last year or two.  The Cities of Plattsburg and Lathrop are in the prime viewing area for the eclipse.  The total eclipse will last 2 minutes and 38 seconds in Plattsburg and 2 minutes and 40 seconds in Lathrop.   The eclipse will begin at approx. 11:40 AM and end at approx. 3:00 PM, with the total eclipse beginning at 1:07 PM.

We have been planning for this event for over a year-the City, Park Board, School, Chamber of Commerce, Police Department, Fire Department and Emergency Services have all been involved. This has been challenging, as no one is sure how many people are going to come to Plattsburg - we have estimates from 500 to 5000 people (or more).  Whatever the number, bottom line, our City will be crowded starting this weekend.  Please be patient, courteous and understanding as there will be an increase in traffic and congestion.  Perkins Park will be the main viewing area for our visitors – we will close Perkins Sunday the 20th and re-open it on Tuesday the 22nd, after cleaning up.  There will be emergency stations at the Park and other locations in the City to assist anyone that may need help.

We have printed brochures with this information.  They are available at City Hall and other locations through Plattsburg – also you can visit our web site

We will have additional Police and emergency personnel on duty and available, as well as volunteers to help with traffic flow and parking. If you live in Plattsburg, you have the best place to view the eclipse-your own yard.  My advice is to stay home and enjoy the eclipse without dealing with the addition traffic and congestion.

Remember to view the eclipse safely you will need SPECIAL GLASSES to protect your eyes.  Without these glasses, you will damage your eyes!   In checking around – everyone in Plattsburg is sold out.   If you do not have them, I would check St. Joseph, Kansas City or Lathrop. DO NOT WATCH THE ECLIPSE WITHOUT THESE GLASSES!

This is a once in a lifetime event.  We are in one of the prime spots in the country and you can enjoy it by walking out in your yard.

I would like to thank everyone who helped in planning for the eclipse.
